Barack Obama and his wife Michele Obama certainly do have a right to be annoyed, insulted and simply livid with those at the New Yorker magazine who thought they were typically "witty and erudite" with their decision to go forward with their most recent cover depiciton of Barack and Michele Obama.

Those on the cocktail circuit in the "beltway and upper west side manhattan" probably do "get it". The point lost somewhere is that there is a large segment of the american populace that does not get it. The individuals I make this point of have probably never seen or even know what the "New Yorker" magazine is!

The media have been reluctant to state the obvious, gutless is the right word, that their is a large and vocal segment of America that would believe anything that was handed to them. This group is not well educated and unfortunately insulated from the type of "banal" humor the New Yorker was attempting to convey.

This same group of less than intellectual voters will most likely make the difference in this years Presidential election. If John McCain wins he will need to drop a note of thanks to the New Yorker for having made a mockery of the political process. The first amendment framers probably never had this scenario in mind when they created the Bill of Rights.
